Blood pressure categories and what they mean

Blood pressure is recorded as two numbers: systolic pressure (top number) and diastolic pressure (bottom number), both measured in mmHg. Categories help describe cardiovascular risk and guide next steps. A single high reading does not automatically mean hypertension, but repeated elevated readings may require attention.

Common categories include Normal, Elevated, Hypertension Stage 1, Hypertension Stage 2, and Hypertensive Crisis. In general, higher readings carry greater risk and often require lifestyle changes and clinical evaluation. Hypertensive Crisis readings (very high systolic or diastolic) may require urgent medical care, especially if symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, confusion, or vision changes are present.

For accurate assessment, take readings after resting, use the correct cuff size, and follow your clinician’s recommendations.
