Estimate eGFR from age, gender, and serum creatinine to understand kidney filtration level.
eGFR is an estimate and should be interpreted with a clinician.
eGFR stands for estimated glomerular filtration rate. It is a laboratory-based estimate of how well the kidneys filter blood. eGFR is calculated from serum creatinine along with age and sex. Creatinine is a waste product from muscle metabolism, and its level in the blood helps estimate filtration. Because creatinine is influenced by muscle mass, hydration, and some medications, eGFR is an estimate rather than a direct measurement.
Kidney function is often discussed in stages. Higher eGFR values are generally better, while lower values can suggest chronic kidney disease when persistent over time. However, diagnosis depends on repeat testing and other markers such as urine albumin, blood pressure, imaging, and symptoms.
If you have abnormal results, swelling, reduced urine output, or chronic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension, discuss kidney health with a clinician.
Can eGFR change day to day? Yes. Hydration, illness, and lab variation can change results.
Is a single low value CKD? Not necessarily. Chronic kidney disease requires persistence over time or other markers.
Should children use this? No. Pediatric formulas differ.
