How ovulation and the fertile window are estimated

Ovulation calculators provide an estimate of when ovulation may occur based on menstrual cycle information. A common assumption is that ovulation happens about 14 days before the next period. If your cycle length is 28 days, this places ovulation around day 14. If your cycle is longer or shorter, the ovulation date is shifted accordingly.

The “fertile window” typically includes the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation, because sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for several days and the egg is viable for a shorter period. Tracking the fertile window can help with family planning, but cycle irregularity, stress, illness, and breastfeeding can change timing.

For improved accuracy, some people use ovulation predictor kits, basal body temperature tracking, or early pregnancy/ultrasound dating when indicated. If you are trying to conceive, have irregular cycles, or have concerns, consider speaking with a qualified clinician.
